If VeriSign signs the root, unilateral control strengthens in US government hands

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

As you are writing your letters to US government officials and the press, remember – whoever signs the root can “unilaterally and silently” change the TLD key material for “political or competitive reasons”.  In the case of VeriSign this is an organization with no public – international or otherwise – participation or oversight mechanism.   If there is an inconsistency, there will be no accountability, with finger pointing between department of commerce and VeriSign.  Although IANA is not perfect, if IANA signs the root, whatever trust the TLD’s have in them is preserved through to publication since the data cannot be changed after signing.   This also ensures clear accountability to one entity.
